Pretty revolting weather was forecast in Adelaide for NYE but we decided to press ahead with our planned outdoor soiree regardless, fingers crossed that once the sun dropped so would the wind. However, as luck would have it a cool change kicked in way earlier than expected and we ended up with a perfect balmy evening.

‘Run rabbit – run rabbit – run, run, run’. My daughter and I were singing this at the market while I was buying a rabbit to make a slow braised ragu for my partner’s birthday dinner. I’m always interested to see how she reacts to the idea of eating a cute animal as she’s quite a carnivore, loving her ‘meso’ (Croatian for meat). She seems to take it in her stride.

So I had half a cauliflower in the fridge that I bought on a whim because they are looking so good at the moment, being in season as they are. Whole cauliflowers were actually going out cheaper than halves and I just couldn’t spend more and get less. Naturally I immediately thought of cauliflower cheese which led me to think about macaroni cheese and then I thought  – why not combine them! Of course I wasn’t the first person to think of this (even though I felt inspired).

41 was not a birthday that was ever going to get much attention (especially after a big 40th last year!) and I hadn’t planned on doing anything beyond thinking Elvin and I would go out for dinner. However my Mum and Dad invited us to their beautiful house in the Barossa Valley for lunch (and also took Lola overnight so we could go out later should we so desire). It was a sunny autumn day and we ate lunch looking out at their gorgeous garden rich with the changing colour of the leaves.
